The City of La
Grange, Texas was designated as an Official Texas Main Street City by
the Texas Historical
Commission, Texas
Main Street Program in January 1996. As an Official Texas Main Street
City, La Grange would receive technical assistance for three years from
the Texas
Historical Commission Main Street Program Office in Austin, Texas. The
City of La Grange through contract with the Texas Historical Commission
Main Street Program agreed to provide funding for a Main Street Manager
and Office Operating Expenses.
However, as a result of strong community support for Main Street; the
first three years of the La Grange Main Street Program from 1996-1998, were
funded through commitments from the La Grange Area Chamber of Commerce,
Fayette County Industrial Foundation, and all four banks in La Grange. The
Fayette County Industrial Foundation pledged $10,000.00 per year for the
first three years; The Chamber of Commerce pledged $10,000.00 per year for
the first three years; and each of the four local banks pledged $2,500.00
per year for a combined total of $10,000.00 each year for the first three
years. At the end of the three years in 1998 the City of La Grange opted
to extend and continue the Main Street Program as a Department of the
City.
The La Grange Main Street
Program is currently a Program of the City of La Grange. Main Street La
Grange also accepts private donations and
sponsorships for the downtown revitalization efforts. The La Grange Main
Street Program holds various fundraisers throughout the year to raise
funds for an Incentive Grant Program targeted at building and business
owners in the community to assist them with improvements.
Paint and sign grants are
available to business and building owners in the Main Street historic
district. Applications for assistance must be made and submitted
to the Main Street Design Committee for approval prior to starting a
project. When the project or sign is completed, as approved,
reimbursement of up to $500.00 will be made.
