The La Grange Main Street Program resulted from a
ground swell of enthusiastic support from citizens of La Grange
who came forward when the La Grange Main Street Application
Committee was formed in February of 1995. The committee
received encouragement, support and excitement from the
beginning. At that time the committee had no idea how much
enthusiasm would be found in La Grange, but they heard again and
again "What can we do to help get Main Street for La
Grange?"
There were many people who assisted with the application
in many ways.
Without the enthusiastic help of many citizens the
application could never have been completed in a few short months.
There were 170 letters of support from citizens of La Grange. There
was financial assistance from the Fayette County Industrial Foundation,
Economic Development Committee, all four banks, and the City of La
Grange. The Industrial Foundation pledged $10,000.00 a year for each
of the three years of the program. Each bank pledged $2,500.00 each
year of the three years and the City of La Grange pledged $10,000 a year
for each of the three years of the program. A local photographer
donated his work. A restaurant owner donated a meal for all business
and building owners. Finally, one of the oldest citizens of La
Grange called the Main Street Application Committee to ask how she could
help. After her call the committee knew they were committed to do
everything they could to get Main Street for La Grange!
